Recipes disagree about units: American recipes use cups, European ones use grams, and your oven speaks Fahrenheit or Celsius. Convert any amount between volume and weight units — with real ingredient densities so a cup of flour is not the same as a cup of honey — and translate oven temperatures including gas mark.
Volume to weight needs the ingredient — a cup of flour weighs 120 g, a cup of honey 340 g.
Densities are standard US cup weights (King Arthur Baking / USDA): flour is spooned and levelled, not scooped, and brown sugar is packed. Weighing dry ingredients is more accurate than any cup measure — a scooped cup of flour can weigh 140 g instead of 120 g. Temperatures are for a conventional oven; fan (convection) ovens usually run about 20°C / 25°F lower.
How it works
Every conversion goes through one base unit. Volume to volume: each unit is defined in millilitres (1 US cup = 236.588 ml, 1 tablespoon = 14.787 ml, 1 teaspoon = 4.929 ml), so converting is a division and a multiplication. Weight to weight: everything goes through grams (1 oz = 28.3495 g, 1 lb = 453.592 g). Volume to weight: the ingredient density does the work — grams = cups × grams-per-cup. Oven temperature: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, and gas marks run in 25°F steps from 275°F (mark 1) to 500°F (mark 10). Worked example 1: 2 cups of all-purpose flour × 120 g per cup = 240 g (8.47 oz). Worked example 2: 100 g of honey ÷ 340 g per cup = 0.29 cups, about 4.7 tablespoons. Worked example 3: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 236.59 ml. Worked example 4: 350°F = (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 177°C, gas mark 4. Worked example 5: 500 g of granulated sugar ÷ 200 g per cup = 2.5 cups.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams is a cup of flour?
120 g for all-purpose flour, spooned into the cup and levelled off — the standard US cup weight used by King Arthur Baking and the USDA. Bread flour is 127 g, whole wheat flour 113 g. If you scoop straight from the bag, the same cup can pack in 140 g, which is why weighing is more accurate than measuring by volume.
Why does a cup of honey weigh more than a cup of flour?
Because density differs: a cup is a volume, not a weight. Honey is dense (340 g per cup), flour is mostly air (120 g per cup). That is why recipes that give grams are more reliable — and why this converter asks which ingredient you mean before converting cups to grams.
How many tablespoons are in a cup?
16 tablespoons in a US cup, and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon, so 48 teaspoons per cup. In the UK, a tablespoon is 15 ml rather than 14.79 ml, and the old imperial tablespoon was 17.76 ml — close enough for most recipes, but use the US figures here.
What is 350 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?
177°C (176.7°C exactly), which is gas mark 4. Common oven settings: 325°F = 163°C (gas 3), 375°F = 191°C (gas 5), 400°F = 204°C (gas 6), 425°F = 218°C (gas 7). For a fan or convection oven, set about 20°C (25°F) lower than the recipe says.
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No — a US customary cup is 236.588 ml, while a metric cup (used in Australia and in many metric recipes) is exactly 250 ml, about 6% larger. A US cup is also 8 fluid ounces. This converter uses the US cup; if your recipe is Australian, use the millilitre figures instead.
