Your Sun sign is where the Sun stood; your Moon sign is where the Moon stood — and since the Moon races through the whole zodiac every 27⅓ days, it depends on your birth day, not just the month. Enter your date and time of birth.
Time zone: your device’s. The Moon moves about a degree every two hours, so if your result lands within a degree of a sign boundary, the exact birth time decides it — the page will tell you when you are that close.
The Moon completes one circuit of the zodiac in 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes — spending about two and a third days in each sign. That speed is why Moon signs cannot be read off a calendar by month like Sun signs: two people born in the same week can carry different Moons.
This page runs the same lunar series as the site's Almanac (the one that lands full moons within a few minutes of the published times) for your birth moment, takes the Moon's ecliptic longitude, and reads off the sign: every 30 degrees of the circle is one sign, beginning at Aries. It also reports the Moon's phase at your birth — astrologers note it, and astronomers can check it.
Use noon. On most days the Moon stays in one sign from morning to night, so noon gives the right sign. If the page warns that you are within a degree of a boundary, treat the answer as "one of two signs" until a birth time turns up.
Usually a birthplace/timezone difference — this quick version uses your device’s time zone; if you were born in another zone, the full Birth Chart calculator on this site, which takes the birthplace properly, is the tiebreaker. The other cause is the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology, which sits about 24 degrees away from the tropical zodiac used here.
Tradition calls it the inner self: your emotional weather, instincts and comforts — the self your close people know, as against the Sun sign’s self you are growing into.
